arrested. crash happened this afternoon near the skyline plaza shopping center near west moore high school. an arrest tonight in the murder of a bay area woman in texas. u.s. marshals caught up with end cot mccray in atlanta, georgia. he had been on the run since the shooting ong sunday. our nbc affiliate in austin says he fired gun shots after getting into a fight with his brother-in-law. police say he ended up killing the woman of san carlos. she was in texas visiting her fiance's family. well, you can see and smell the smoke in several parts of the bay area. that wildfire near lake barisa continues to burn out of control. right now, 4,000 acres and it's threatening homes and campgrounds. take a look now from our nbc chopper. we show you some pictures of the cold fire.

just off highway 28 near the town of winter. popular recreation spot. let's bring in jodi hernandez at the fire command post in winter. what's the progress report here? >> well, we're hoping to get some updated information later this evening, but as of rate now, cal fire says the fire remains at 5% con tand. now, the fire flared up within the last hour or so on the northwest side of the fire, it crossed the fire line and you can see just how smoky it is in that direction. we're told four structures, either cabins or houses are threatened in that very area. this fire fight is is far from over. >> the fire is still burning hot. scorching more than 4,000 ache es in just 24 hours and leaving several dozen homes and a campground in danger. >> it's extremely difficult to get resources in there.

just because it's so steep and dangerous. >> helicopters are using water in the lake to try to douse the flames, while more than 700 firefighters attack it from the ground. >> just here to keep the fire out of the trees. keep it in fields and grasses instead of the trees because if it gets in the trees, it can really get moving. >> markly cove has seen a big drop in business. their normally busy boat launch has been quiet. the fire, smoke and highway closure is keeping lake lovers away. >> it's hurting business. and it's really slow. haven't had any watches today. >> this group from sfsz ventured out today. they're not letting the fire top their summer fun. >> outside, we pretty much have the lake to ourselves. so pretty nice. >> and we're back here live where you can see where the fire has flared up within the last hour or so. firefighters are trying to aggressively attack it from the

an illegal campfire that sparked this fire on july 22nd. officials are also considering what potential penalties they could face. it can include paying for the cost of the fire, charged with the death of a bulldozer operating who was kill ed while battling the fire. turning to decision 2016. and tonight, some top republicans are considering an intervention with donald trump. comes of his latest controversy, refusing to endorse for re-election, the republican senator, john mccain and paul ryan. there are plans for a high level meeting to pressure trump to change his tone and tactics. >> the trump campaign staff is despondent right now wauf the difficulty they're having in getting donald trump the take the direction that normal candidates take when you get into a general election. >> more high profile republicans are breaking ranks to support hillary clinton. they include meg whitman, a former california gubernatorial

candidate. she denounced trump as a quote, danger to national security. only on nbc, we're hear frg the life guard who confronted the man accused of sexually assaulting a 16-year-old girl. that man might have also targeted another teenager. this all happened at a community pool in concord. elise, what do we know about the suspect so far? >> well, we've learned that suspect has been working in this residential neighborhood about two hours on sunday. he first approached a 13-year-old girl, then went after a 16 life guard on duty here at the community pool. video captures a man. sunday even. allegedly lurking over the community pool inside the walnut country clubhouse in concord. >> trying get in, some kids let him in. >> look closely and you can see the faint image of a 16-year-old

life guard walk tog a shed, then the suspect gets up and follows her. >> sat on her, starting touching her. >> alone, police say the girl tells him to stop. cameras show her running away. this life guard who doesn't want to show his face, rushed from another pool to help. >> i saw someone sitting over there. >> then confronts the man in his 40s. >> he was really short. south american. short hair. skinny. >> the description he gave was the same description. >> homeowner president mark wineman says a 13-year-old girl has come forward, saying the suspect first targeted her inside the nearby tennis courts. >> and was watching her for a while which she said was kind of a creepy situation. >> then targeted the 16-year-old girl alone at the pool. >> i just feel bad for her. >> and the life guard tells me that when he confronted the suspect, he lied, gave him a fake address and then ran away. homeowners fear he may strike again and they hope he's caught

before that happens. reporting live in concord, nbc bay area news. it took a large tangle charter bus that split in half yesterday. four passengers were killed in the crash. not five. more than two dozen were hut, including the driver. relatives tell nbc news the driver lost his wife to cancer cently. the bus was traveling from mexico to washington state. vest garretts say it will take a month to sort out what happened. a tutor is in jail accused of sex crimes against a san jose teenager. police are trying to determine if there are more victims. thomas reeves is accused of having a relationship with the student. he's the tutor. it began allegedly last october. reeves was in jail on a separate charge before police charged him with 13 counts of child molestation. police are asking for help from anyone who might know more about this case. video of a man's arrest by

bart police officers went viral. today, the man was in court. two different videos show officers arresting the man at the bart station last friday. police say the suspect kicked one officer in the head and throat, bit another and then spit on a third officer. today, smith appeared in court for the first time since the arrest. he is charged with seven counts of battery on a police officer and resisting arrest. bart police have launched an internal investigation to figure out if excessive force wassed during his arrest. the driver took off after a crash on highway 9. that left his own cousin dead. coming up, how officers were able to find him. also, a local hiker missing in oregon for about a week now. why searchers say it's very possible he could be found alive. the olympic games in rio

anru officers say he crashed his car, killing his cousin, then took off. you are looking at the aftermath of the crash, tonight, the driver is under arrest. mary ann has the latest on how offices tracked him down. >> seven hours after that deadly crash, the suspected hit and run driver called police. and turned himself in. around 1:00 this morning, a 29-year-old man driving a nissan versa went off the road on highway 9 near sahr sayre toga and slammed into a tree. the driver's kuz b, a 19-year-olden woman, was killed an her 15-year-old friend is hospitalized in critical condition. officers say the driver left the scene. seven hours later -- >> driver for the vehicle actually called san jose pd and turned himself in. personnel took custody of the driver and then turned him over

arrived. the u.s. men's and women's basketball team got into town today. the men's team features three warrior, thompson, green and durant, was taken to the port where the players boarded that cruise ship and they're not going to be in the usual hotel. they'll be in the cruise ship throughout the limb p picks. the youngest american to qualify for the olympics is a teenager from the south bay. 16-year-old table tennis prodigy is from mill peeds. he began play iing from his family's garage when 5 years old. the u.s. has never brought home a medal in table tennis and he's trying change that. you're going to hear from this teen and his family coming up on "nbc nightly news" at 5:30. nbc bay area is your home for the olympics.

jessica is live in rio antd we'll start her reports tomorrow. gl this is going ton fun. now, it's finally here. >> i can't wait for opening ceremony. we're going to be glued to the television sets and have more on the rio forecast coming up. back here across the bay area. still was warm for some of the interior valleys today as we get a look at our live sky camera network here from weather underground. you can see blue sky right here from walnut creek. humidity at 24%, now, the fire dangers continue to remain the highest here where we have the wildfire, west of winter. 95 degrees on the fire lines. wintds out of the east at 15 miles per hour. temperatures will be in the 80 about 9:00 through the midnight, so a tough go for those firefighters. as we get a look across the rest of the sky camera network here throughout the bay area, we have some fog here in the san francisco.

currently 64 degrees. for the peninsula, sunny skies and 73 and throughout the south bay, 82. as we head through tomorrow morning's forecast, a mix of sun and also, clouds. we'll have a typical fog coming back to san francisco and 53. for the peninsula, a45i and a mostly clear start for the south bay and 59 degrees. we've been talk iing about cool changes moving in and i want to move into that next. it's going to be a dramatic change here, at least for some of the interior valleys. it's going to be about this jet stream sinking to the south. as that happens, we'll allow three storm systems to move to the bay area. these two weaker systems will help enhance the fog and marine layer and bring in slightly cooler air. so now, i want to show you next. how enjoyable these temperatures are going to be for some of the interior valleys. over to contra costa and alameda counties. instead of 90s, it looks like

tomorrow, we'll top out at 84 degrees. looking good for tomorrow. as we take you into your micro climate forecast for thursday, we'll have 83 for a high in downtown san jose. for the peninsula, 59 in half moon bay. over to palo alto, a sunny and comfortable 76. for san francisco, temperatures in the low 60s. north bay, east bay and trivalley, yes, it's going warm in the trivalley, but out of the 90s. so this will put us at 85 in dan vel. 83 in pleasonton. check it out. mill valley. probably some of our best weather there tomorrow and 70 degrees. san francisco, not too many huge changes. we'll stay in the low to mid 60s through sunday and a modest warm early next week. you can see here, we are cooler. 84 for the average for tomorrow. we'll stay with low 80s through saturday's forecast. and how about a quick look at rio just because we can for opening ceremony on friday. 82 degrees.

aircraft making water drops and drops of fire retardant. this is near the borders of yolo, napa and solano. it's 5% contained. this is near lake bariesa. we'll follow the story through the night and the next several days. 5% contained and 4,000 acres at this hour. high school students in the city of ukai are using social media to fight cockroaches. it captures video of the inis sects. to pressure them to get rid of them. they've been waging this battle for three years now. now, the roaches have their own facebook page. they say the goal is to embarrass the school. a real life hack presented a real problem. hackers stole $65 million of bit coins. the breach forced bit county trade tog come to a halt. now, when trading continued, the value fell 20%. however, the u.s. dollar was not impacted by the hack.

it's a giant leap for space travel. a silicon valley start up might be the first private company to get approval to head to the moon. the company plans to send a small robot to explore the moons next year. the faa needs to inspect the rocket before the company can countdown to lift off and if all goes well with the mission, the company wants to create a space station that allows rockets to refuel mid flight on the way to the moon. okay. a special celebration for san francisco police. we'll explain, next. ♪
